The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) passed Act 197 in 2011 mandating water systems serving five thousand persons or more “to control the quantity of fluoride in the water so as to maintain a fluoride content established by the Department of Health”.

On Monday, March 7, 2016, the City of Fort Smith will begin fluoridating the drinking water.  In accordance with the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) April 2015 recommendation, the fluoridation level of 0.7 mg/L will be used.
